Therapy or nah?

Today I wanted to talk about a “taboo” subject that folks tend to freak out about or have too much anxiety to go this route. The subject is therapy. I laugh at myself for not seeking therapy sooner! My friends would tell me to do it and I would never take the step to call an office and get connected to a therapist or counselor. Why? Because it was not something my family did, even though all the people in my family could really benefit from it. Now I do not want you all to think that my family thinks its taboo to go seek help from a therapist BUT they did think that until two deaths happened in our family and from that stemmed years of anxiety and shock from the passing. That is really when I should have started going to therapy. I got so much support from my family which I was not really expecting.

The question is should you or should you not go to therapy? My answer is yes. Did it really help you or are you lying and saying it did? No, I am not lying! Therapy helped me answer and deal with the trauma I grew up with in not liking the way I looked and the racism and xenophobia I and my family faced when growing up. One thing I realized is we tend to think that the trauma will go away but it never will but in all actuality it will be a part of your life until that last day. It is all about how you are confronting it in your life and what ways are you coping with it. NOW, I do want to say this is my opinion and I am not a licensed professional, but this is my experience (not anyone else’s).

Therapy is the best thing I did for me. I am not going to go into much detail in this post, but I will in future posts. Should you go to therapy? YES, BUT it is sometimes hard to connect with a therapist that will know your cultural background and does not gaslight you. It is so important for someone to be able to learn about you and what your culture is so there is not bias and or racism in the work they do. It is also not your job to educate them. So, sometimes the process of finding a therapist can be hard and long but know that you are taking those steps to better yourself and your life. For, now, this is all I must share with you all. I look forward to sharing my therapy journey with you!
